MISSION & OBJECTIVE
A singular experience far away from the festival circuit, Marfa Film Festival has become a beacon for amazing filmmakers industry and press from around the world. Marfa is a get-away that is truly unique. We are not a competition. Rather we are a celebration of innovation and excellence in film, both contemporary and classic, set five thousand feet high on the great Marfa Plateau, a deeply remote land with a fascinating history as an art and film mecca. It is a experience both filmmakers and attendees don’t soon forget.
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Marfa, Texas is a tiny town known for epic landscapes, eclectic people and world renowned film making and.
It’s also a modern art mecca thanks to Donald Judd and an epic legendary film location thanks to George Stevens’s “Giant,” P.T. Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood,” and the Coen Brothers’ “No Country for Old Men” which were all filmed here. Film historians note that Fort Davis (just up the road) is the inspiration for John Ford’s Texas in most his projects.
Designed as a gasp of fresh air, Marfa Film Festival is a retreat far away from the chaotic and competitive environments found of the festival circuit. It’s a get-away hours away from anywhere, a place to enjoy great films, art and music while soaking up the magic of the environment. The idea of MFF being non competitive is simply equality, we strive to set a stage where first time film makers can share their visions along side film veterans and living legends. Film selections may include many forgotten classics along with new films. There are screenings out on the prairie at night. Marching bands may roam the streets. Things are different.
We truly believe cinema is an art not a contest, so there are no first place prizes, no winners, only the films that are invited and a remarkable place to screen them and experience this magnificent land and meet the artists and patrons from all disciplines who come to Marfa. Festival Alumni have gone on to win Oscars, Emmys, and top honors in festivals around the world. We firmly believe filmmakers are the most important element of the festival, this is why we screen films one at a time, lending our whole audiences attention to the work 1 by1 without distraction or competition. It’s been a magnificent journey, we hope you will join us and share your work.
