On November 14, 2009, Austin Film Society members Susan and Rob Burneson received an award from the Texas Oral History Association for their film “A Community Mosaic.”
The film focuses on two Central Austin neighborhoods and their 120-foot-long mosaic Wall of Welcome. Artist Jean Graham and hundreds of community members worked together for more than five years to raise money for and create the wall, which was completed and dedicated in March 2008. The wall is located at 7100 Woodrow Avenue in Austin.
The Mary Faye Barnes Award for Excellence in Community History Projects was presented for Susan and Rob’s “outstanding work in collecting and preserving oral histories of significance to the story of the Brentwood and Crestview neighborhoods of Austin.”
“A Community Mosaic” is one element of a unique community history project in Austin, Voices of the Violet Crown, which also includes a neighborhood history exhibit and booklet and ongoing oral history interviews.
