People in the Shadows at AAAFF

The Austin Asian American Film Festival kicks off this Thursday and runs through the weekend with screenings at the Alamo South Lamar, the Union Theater at UT, the MACC and other venues. UT’s Middle Eastern Studies Department is co-sponsoring the US premiere of former Austinite and 1999 TFPF recipient Bani Khoshnoudi’s feature documentary PEOPLE IN THE SHADOWS, which “shows the capitol city of Tehran in all its complexities and contradictions.” Random fun fact – one of the cinematographers on the doc was Athina Rachel Tsangari, another former Austinite and TFPF recipient.

AFS is co-sponsoring the outdoor screening of another Iran-themed film, the truly excellent animated PERSEPOLIS on Saturday, Nov. 14th. The festival is also showcasing some great films that have been making the festival rounds, like Nina Paley’s SITA SINGS THE BLUES and Tze Chun’s CHILDREN OF INVENTION. There’s lots of great stuff to see this year, plus some killer parties to attend with an all-access pass.
