Gretchen on DVD

Two-time TFPF recipient Steve Collins’ feature debut GRETCHEN is now available on DVD courtesy of Watchmaker Films. Pick it up at Amazon.com or rent it on Netflix.
Steve received a 2002 TFPF grant for the short-film version of the feature, with the title GRETCHEN AND THE NIGHT DANGER, which I’m presuming is one of the three bonus shorts on the DVD. Both the short and feature are hilarious portraits of arguably the most painfully awkward girl ever to suffer through the humilations of high school, played with exquisite timing by ex-Austinite Courtney Davis. The film took home the Best Narrative Prize at the 2006 LA Film Festival and has played frequently on the Sundance Channel since then.

The DVD has the feature plus three short films: Lonelyland, Gretchen and the Night Danger, and Gretchen and the Wolf Wizard. Instead of a commentary on the feature, Steve Collins provides commentary on the three short films which, when heard in chronological sequence, creates a narrative about the project history and the development of his working methods over five years up to and including the feature. There is also an extensive booklet that expands on these themes with a critical eye.
GRETCHEN is also available from Netflix for download and it will be available soon from The Auteurs.
